My Thoughts on Surprise! The Supposed Talent Show Was Actually–?!
This novel, "Surprise! The Supposed Talent Show Was Actually–?!", has been quite the ride! It's a blend of genres I didn't expect to enjoy so much, and I found myself completely engrossed in the story. While it has some quirks, the overall experience was definitely worth it.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the unique premise: an idol trainee entering what he thinks is a talent show, only to find himself in a futuristic battle royale. The story throws you right into the action, and I was immediately curious about how the protagonist, Wu Jin, would navigate this bizarre new world. The early chapters are filled with confusion and humor as Wu Jin tries to make sense of his surroundings, and I found myself rooting for him from the start.
What Works Well
The world-building in this novel is truly impressive. The author has created a detailed and imaginative futuristic society with its own set of rules and challenges. Each "game" or instance is cleverly designed, drawing inspiration from diverse sources like cellular automaton, Darwin's Theory, tarot cards, and even dinosaurs! I especially appreciated the author's ability to seamlessly integrate these complex ideas into the story.
I also found the characters to be well-developed and engaging. Wu Jin's growth from a naive newcomer to a determined competitor is a highlight of the novel. He works incredibly hard to improve his skills, and it's satisfying to see him overcome obstacles and prove his worth. The male lead, Wei Shi, is the typical cold and powerful type, but he is very supportive of Wu Jin's goals, and their relationship is quite sweet with lots of fluff and kisses. The side characters are also fun and add depth to the story, and their interactions with Wu Jin are often humorous.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, there were a few aspects that I found less appealing. Some readers might find the MC's initial naivete and "cute bunny" persona a bit grating, and I can understand that perspective. Additionally, the ML is very OP, and I sometimes wished that Wu Jin had more opportunities to shine on his own without Wei Shi's intervention.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may be turned off by the fact that Wu Jin's background is changed from a time traveler to a scabbard from R-base.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Surprise! The Supposed Talent Show Was Actually–?!" is a highly entertaining and well-written novel. The unique premise, creative world-building, engaging characters, and satisfying character growth make it a worthwhile read. If you're looking for a blend of action, adventure, comedy, and romance with a touch of sci-fi, I highly recommend giving this novel a try.
