My Thoughts on After Being Marked, I Have a Baby
"After Being Marked, I Have a Baby" is quite the ride, blending fantasy, romance, and even a touch of sci-fi into a unique yuri experience. The premise alone grabbed my attention, and I was eager to see how the author would weave together such disparate elements. This novel certainly isn't afraid to take risks, and for the most part, it pays off.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the setup: an alien landing on Earth and, through a series of unforeseen events, ending up with our main character, Xinmi, pregnant. The amnesia element added a layer of mystery, and the subsequent creation of an immersive video game by the alien, seemingly designed to regain her power, felt like a clever way to explore her backstory. The story dives right into the action, and I found myself immediately invested in Xinmi's journey.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its heartwarming depiction of found family and the development of the central relationship. The "cold CEO" trope, but with a female lead, is something that many readers seem to enjoy, and the dynamic between the strong, capable alien and the more "normal" Xinmi is compelling. I especially appreciated the focus on childcare and the "cute children" aspect, which adds a layer of sweetness to the narrative. The side stories, particularly the one involving Xinmi's friend and her boss, as well as the virtual daughter of one couple and Xinmi's daughter, were also a welcome addition, expanding the world and providing further insight into the characters. I also appreciated the Yin and Yang/Omegaverse elements, which added depth to the romance.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find some of the plot twists a little forced. Specifically, the revelation about the maid and the queen being the same person, and that character being younger than expected, felt a bit rushed and not entirely organic to the narrative. It felt like a late-stage addition to add more depth, but it didn't quite land for me.
