My Thoughts on After Being Bent by Reader
"After Being Bent by Reader" promised a fluffy yuri romance with a touch of comedy, and for the most part, it delivered. The premise of a "straight" yuri author being pursued by her boss's daughter is undeniably intriguing, and I found myself quickly drawn into Xu Chuanchuan's world.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are quite charming, setting up the dynamic between the timid Xu Chuanchuan and the seemingly cold Murong Shi. I appreciated the slow burn, allowing the characters' personalities to shine through before diving into the romance. The peek into the world of web novel platforms and the behind-the-scenes drama was an unexpected but welcome addition.
What Works Well
The character development, particularly in the first half of the novel, is a definite strength. I enjoyed watching Xu Chuanchuan grapple with her feelings and gradually come to terms with her sexuality. Murong Shi's character, despite her initial domineering traits, also shows growth as the story progresses. The side characters, especially Ange and Fang Qin, added depth and humor to the narrative, and I found myself rooting for their relationship as well. The writing style is easy to follow, and the translation quality is commendable.
Areas of Concern
However, I did find myself sharing some of the concerns raised by other readers. The pacing, while initially well-managed, becomes uneven towards the end, feeling rushed in its resolution. The power imbalance between Xu Chuanchuan and Murong Shi is another point of contention. While some readers found it endearing, I felt it occasionally veered into uncomfortable territory, with Murong Shi's actions sometimes bordering on manipulative. I also wished that some of the side plotlines, particularly those involving Murong Shi's father and Xu Chuanchuan's sister, had been explored more thoroughly.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk about some things that might spoil your reading experience! Some readers were disappointed by the ending of certain side pairings, feeling that they were either underdeveloped or abruptly resolved. There's also a moment with Chuanchuan at the very end that I personally found jarring with the rest of the story.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "After Being Bent by Reader" is an enjoyable read, especially if you're a fan of sweet yuri romances. The characters are likeable, the plot is engaging, and the humor is well-placed. While the power imbalance and pacing issues may not appeal to all readers, the overall heartwarming nature of the story makes it worth checking out. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
