My Thoughts on After Becoming the Heroine, I Just Want to Be a Widow
"After Becoming the Heroine, I Just Want to Be a Widow" is a completed web novel that I recently finished reading, and it's definitely left me with mixed feelings. While it's an enjoyable enough read, I wouldn't necessarily place it among my all-time favorites. It's a lighthearted take on transmigration and revenge, but some elements felt a bit too simplistic for my taste.
First Impressions
The premise immediately hooked me. A female protagonist transmigrating into a novel written by her enemy, determined to rewrite her tragic ending? Sign me up! I was eager to see how she'd navigate the familiar tropes of ancient China settings, especially with the added layer of knowing the "plot" beforehand. It felt like a fun twist on the usual transmigration story.
What Works Well
The protagonist is a definite highlight. She's described as seemingly delicate, but with a surprisingly strong and vengeful side, which I found incredibly appealing. I also appreciated the "green flag" male lead who dotes on her. Their relationship was sweet and provided a nice contrast to the more dramatic elements of the plot. The revenge plot itself, while not overly complex, was satisfying. Seeing the FL actively taking charge and dishing out some well-deserved retribution was definitely a plus. Also, the novel does well by wrapping up the story in a short time, so it doesn't drag on and become tiring.
Areas of Concern
The biggest drawback for me was the simplicity of the plot and villains. While I appreciate a lighthearted read, the antagonists often felt too brainless, and the solutions to problems seemed to conveniently fall into place. This lack of complexity made the story feel somewhat predictable, and I longed for a bit more depth and intrigue, and if you are used to reading more realistic novels, this may be a bit too fantastical for you. While the story is enjoyable, the plot may feel rushed at times.
Final Verdict
"After Becoming the Heroine, I Just Want to Be a Widow" is a decent read if you're looking for a light, trope-filled story with a satisfying revenge plot and a sweet romance. Just don't expect intricate political schemes or morally grey characters. It's a good way to pass the time, especially if you enjoy transmigration stories with a strong female lead. Overall, I'd recommend it for a quick, easy read when you're in the mood for something not too demanding.
