My Thoughts on Abuse of Magic is Prohibited
"Abuse of Magic is Prohibited" promised a delightful blend of comedy, fantasy, and romance, and while it delivered on some fronts, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, I was charmed by the premise: a down-on-his-luck mage accidentally marries a wealthy CEO thanks to a magical mishap. The comedy of misunderstandings was genuinely funny, and I enjoyed watching the protagonist scramble to explain his situation while the CEO hilariously misinterprets everything. The cute factor was definitely high, especially with the mention of adorable, wand-wielding mice familiars!
What Works Well
The early chapters shine with lighthearted humor and a sweet, developing relationship. The male lead's earnestness and tendency to jump to wild conclusions about his "amnesia" created plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. I appreciated the author's attempt to weave in elements of fantasy, like vampires and angels, into a modern setting. The story definitely had the potential to be a fun, easy read.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, as the story progressed, I found myself getting increasingly lost in the plot. What started as a charming comedy of errors morphed into a confusing tangle of vampires, magic councils, and poorly explained backstories. The casual writing style, while initially appealing, ultimately undermined the impact of major plot points and character development. I also felt the romance lost its spark as the story focused more on the convoluted plot, and the characters seemed to act inconsistently.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers pointed out specific plot holes and confusing elements related to the vampires and the protagonist's master. The motivation behind the master's actions and the role of the magic council felt vague and underdeveloped. The climax, involving a battle between angels and vampires, was described as underwhelming and poorly explained.
Final Verdict
While "Abuse of Magic is Prohibited" started strong with its comedic premise and charming characters, the confusing plot and inconsistent character development ultimately detracted from my enjoyment. The first few chapters are worth a read for a lighthearted laugh, but be prepared for the story to lose its way as it progresses. If you're looking for a quick, easy read with minimal plot complexity, this might still be up your alley. However, if you prefer well-developed plots and consistent character arcs, you might find yourself disappointed.
