My Thoughts on A Brilliance, Yet Obtained

"A Brilliance, Yet Obtained" is a beautifully written shounen ai novel that really resonated with me. It's a coming-of-age story that focuses on the romance between two high school boys, and it's clear why it has garnered so much praise. While it took me a bit to get completely hooked, the payoff was definitely worth it.

First Impressions

Initially, I found the beginning a little slow. The first few chapters didn't immediately grab my attention, and I felt a bit detached from the characters at first. The pacing felt a bit off, and it was hard to get a feel for the characters. However, I'm glad I stuck with it, because things definitely picked up!

What Works Well

The strength of this novel lies in its characters and their relationship. Jing Can and He Pingyi are both incredibly well-developed, and their journey of healing and mutual salvation is captivating. I especially appreciated Jing Can's empathy and how human he felt. The author does a fantastic job of portraying their growth and how they come together to support each other.

The writing style is also a major plus. It's poetic and evocative, creating a vivid picture in my mind. The imagery is excellent, making it feel like I was watching a movie unfold. The little details and foreshadowing are masterfully woven together, adding depth and richness to the story. I also have to commend the translator, as the translation is excellent and easy to follow.

Areas of Concern

One minor issue I had was the initial pacing. It took me a while to become fully invested in the story and the characters. Also, although the love story is very sweet, the perfection of the relationship can feel a little unrealistic at times.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers may find the handling of certain plot points, like the identity of Song Yinan, to be somewhat vague or unnecessary.

Final Verdict

Despite a slightly slow start, "A Brilliance, Yet Obtained" is a truly beautiful and touching novel. The characters are well-developed, the writing is poetic, and the story is ultimately a heartwarming tale of love and healing. I highly recommend giving this underrated gem a try, especially if you enjoy character-driven romances with a touch of melancholy. I'd give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
