My Thoughts on Zi Fei Yu
"Zi Fei Yu" promised a deep dive into the relationship of Ji Leyu and Lin Fei, characters I'd briefly encountered in a previous work by the author, and I was eager to jump in. Overall, I found it to be a heartwarming, if sometimes repetitive, exploration of their unique bond.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a little taken aback by Ji Leyu's intense clinginess. He definitely comes across as possessive, and I could see how some readers might find his behavior unhealthy. However, as the story unfolded, I began to understand the complexities of their dynamic. It's clear that both Leyu and Fei have their own insecurities and needs, and their relationship, while unconventional, addresses those needs in a way that works for them.
What Works Well
The core strength of "Zi Fei Yu" lies in the chemistry between Ji Leyu and Lin Fei. The author excels at portraying their deep affection and understanding of each other. I appreciated the subtle nuances in their interactions and the way their love evolved as they matured. The banter was excellent. Moreover, I found the supporting characters surprisingly well-developed, particularly Qin Yan, whose intelligence and friendship with Ji Leyu added depth to the narrative. The novel explores the future of the characters from "I am the Father of the Villain" and shows what their lives would have been like without the interference of the protagonist.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel, I did find myself skimming through some of the repetitive descriptions and dialogues. The story could have benefited from tighter editing. Additionally, the "showbiz" aspects felt somewhat tacked on and underdeveloped. Ji Leyu's acting career didn't quite integrate seamlessly into the overall narrative, and I found myself less invested in those plotlines.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might find the romantic relationship portrayed in this novel to be co-dependent, but the characters seem to be aware of the potential for abuse/stress, which helps keep things sweet.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Zi Fei Yu" is a sweet and engaging read, particularly for those who enjoy slice-of-life stories with a focus on character development and unique relationships. If you're a fan of the author's other works, or if you're drawn to stories with doting love interests and a touch of humor, I recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a bit of repetition along the way.
