My Thoughts on Yuusha Yori Saikyouna Kuro Kishi
This web novel, "Yuusha Yori Saikyouna Kuro Kishi" (The Black Knight is Stronger Than the Hero), certainly piqued my interest with its intriguing premise. A strong female lead, a summoned hero, and a world ripe for adventure? Sign me up! However, after diving in, I found myself experiencing a mix of satisfaction and slight frustration.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the concept of a capable female knight overshadowing the typical summoned hero. The prologue hints at a dynamic between the Black Knight and this hero, a scenario I was eager to witness. However, the story quickly shifts focus, detailing the MC's life several years before the hero's arrival. While this isn't necessarily bad, it did feel like a bit of a bait-and-switch, leaving me wanting the promised interaction that was initially presented.
What Works Well
Chie, the female protagonist, is a definite highlight. Unlike some female leads in the genre, she's intelligent, strong, and approaches situations practically. She treats people as individuals, not just harem fodder, which I found incredibly refreshing. The world-building is solid, with the Empire presented in a surprisingly positive light compared to the more traditionally "good" kingdoms. I appreciate the effort put into showing the Empire's progress and Chie's role in it. The multi-POV aspect also adds a layer of depth and humor, allowing us to see the story from different perspectives. And I can't deny that the idea of a paced romance developing alongside the action is appealing.
Areas of Concern
My main issue echoes a sentiment I've seen echoed in the community: the slow pace. The story spends a considerable amount of time on events before the hero even shows up. While the world-building and character development are appreciated, the core premise of the "stronger than the hero" aspect feels distant. This is compounded by the fact that the story seems to be on hiatus, leaving many plot threads dangling. I also found myself wanting more details about Chie's character development.
