My Thoughts on You’re So Arrogant
"You're So Arrogant" is a completed web novel that I recently dove into, and it's definitely a mixed bag. While it has its charming moments, particularly with the female lead, there are aspects that left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Overall, it's a light read with some character growth, but be prepared for a potentially frustrating male lead.
First Impressions
Going in, I was intrigued by the premise of an arranged marriage and an arrogant male lead. The initial chapters set the stage with a cheerful female lead and a cold, brooding male lead recovering from blindness. It definitely had the classic ingredients for a compelling romance, but I soon discovered that the execution is where opinions diverge.
What Works Well
The female lead, Ye An, is undoubtedly the strongest point of this novel. Many readers, including myself, found her to be a breath of fresh air. She's described as genuinely nice, confident, and even a little sassy, which makes her incredibly likeable. Her interactions with the male lead are often funny and sweet, and her unwavering optimism is infectious. I also appreciated that the story avoids overly dramatic plot twists, making it a relatively chill and easy read. The character development, particularly of the male lead as he learns to appreciate the female lead, is another positive aspect.
Areas of Concern
The male lead, Xie Shuo, is where things get a little rocky. Some readers found him boring and difficult to sympathize with, even considering his circumstances. His initial arrogance and insensitivity can be frustrating, and his redemption arc might not be enough to win everyone over. I also noticed the plot, while simple, might be too simple for some. Some may find it to be boring and uneventful.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviews mentioned a significant plot twist regarding the female lead's feelings for the male lead. Apparently, the revelation that she didn't initially love him, and her motivations for the marriage, can feel unearned and jarring, especially since the story is told from an omniscient perspective. Also, there are some problematic portrayals of blindness and some potentially misogynistic actions from the male lead's family.
Final Verdict
"You're So Arrogant" is a decent read if you're looking for a light and simple romance with a strong female lead. However, be prepared for a potentially frustrating male lead and a plot that may feel underdeveloped at times. While it has its flaws, the character growth and sweet interactions between the leads make it an enjoyable, if not particularly groundbreaking, read. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
