My Thoughts on You Are Still Here
"You Are Still Here" is definitely a novel that evokes strong reactions, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a story that follows the tumultuous relationship of two individuals over a decade, from their initial awkward romance to a complicated reunion later in life. It's angsty, dramatic, and at times, frustrating, but also deeply human.
First Impressions
I went into this story knowing it wasn't going to be a light and fluffy read. The premise itself, a love tested and potentially failed, hinted at the emotional rollercoaster to come. The initial chapters drew me in with the dynamic between the protagonists: a confident, popular male lead pursuing a proud but insecure female lead from a humble background.
What Works Well
What really resonated with me was the realism. Relationships aren't always sunshine and roses, and this novel doesn't shy away from the gritty parts. It delves into how external pressures, personal insecurities, and a lack of communication can erode even the strongest connections. The male lead's unwavering devotion, despite the female lead's often cold behavior, was also a compelling aspect. His pursuit of her felt genuine, even if his methods were sometimes immature. I also appreciated the female lead's character, as flawed and frustrating as she could be. Her struggles with pride, independence, and societal expectations felt relatable.
Areas of Concern
However, I also understand some of the criticisms. The female lead's hesitancy and the couple's overall lack of communication can be incredibly frustrating. There were times I wanted to shake both of them and force them to just talk! The male lead's initial infatuation, without a clear explanation, felt somewhat rushed. The on-again, off-again nature of their relationship, while realistic, could feel dragging at times.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers felt the ending focused too much on secondary characters.
Final Verdict
"You Are Still Here" is not a perfect novel, but it's a compelling one. If you're looking for a story that explores the complexities of relationships, the impact of personal flaws, and the enduring power of love, even amidst hardship, then this might be for you. Just be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster and characters that you'll both love and want to yell at. I'd recommend it with the caveat that it's a bittersweet, angsty ride, not a fairytale romance.
