My Thoughts on Who On Earth Bit Me?
Who On Earth Bit Me? promised a fluffy omegaverse romance, and while it delivers on some of that, it also threw me for a loop in the best (and slightly bewildering) way. This novel definitely subverted my expectations.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the classic setup: a seemingly dense protagonist, An Lan, suddenly differentiating into an Alpha amidst a sea of vying love interests. The school life setting and the promise of a reverse harem with comedic undertones had me hooked. I was ready for some lighthearted drama and swoon-worthy moments between An Lan and his suitors. The first few chapters do a great job of establishing the potential love interests, making it genuinely difficult to choose a favorite.
What Works Well
The characters are a definite highlight. An Lan is empathetic and level-headed, making him easy to root for. The author did an excellent job giving depth to each of the characters, with clear motivations and a strong focus on world-building. One of the most interesting aspects of the novel is how the three potential love interests respect each other and treat each other well. I also appreciated how the author addressed the parents' backstory and how it related to the story. The author did a good job making the story more than just the typical school campus romance.
Areas of Concern
While the shift from school romance to crime-fighting thriller was unexpected, it also felt a bit jarring. The escalation felt a little too fast. It felt like the plot got everywhere. There was also a desire for more romance and sweetness in the later half. I do wish there had been more moments where I went "awww".
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, so here's where things get interesting. The story takes a major left turn. What starts as a school life drama blossoms into a full-blown crime-fighting plot. I was thrown for a loop. Also, it becomes pretty clear relatively early on who the endgame ML is.
Final Verdict
Despite the unexpected genre shift and my initial confusion, I ultimately enjoyed Who On Earth Bit Me?. The strong character development, unique plot, and overall positive message make it a worthwhile read. If you're looking for a novel that defies expectations and isn't afraid to take risks, this might be right up your alley. Just be prepared to trade your fruit wine for a shot of vodka halfway through.
