My Thoughts on Who Moved My Mountain
"Who Moved My Mountain" promised a delightful blend of fantasy, comedy, and romance, and for the most part, it delivered a fun, if somewhat uneven, experience. The premise is certainly unique: a mountain god, Yun Rong, awakens after millennia to find her mountain about to be developed. Her quest to earn 100 million to buy it back is what got me hooked in the first place.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were a breath of fresh air. Yun Rong's naivete regarding modern society, contrasted with her immense supernatural power, created some genuinely hilarious situations. The story felt lighthearted, and I was eager to see how she would navigate the human world. I also appreciated the introduction of Lu Heinian, the male lead, and his initial interactions with Yun Rong.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in its humor and the fish-out-of-water element. Watching Yun Rong, a 4000-year-old mountain god, try to understand concepts like money and business was consistently amusing. I also liked the supporting characters, especially Lu Heinian's family. They brought a lot of positive energy to the story and were genuinely entertaining in their attempts to play matchmaker. The supernatural elements, with demons and ghosts adapting to modern life, added an interesting layer to the world-building.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel isn't without its flaws. The pacing felt off at times, and the ending, in particular, felt rushed and incomplete. Several plot points were left unresolved, leaving me with a sense of dissatisfaction. I also found the romantic development to be somewhat lacking. The characters don't get together until the very end, leaving little room for the "fluff" I was hoping for. Some may find the male lead's protectiveness of Yun Rong to be a bit overbearing, bordering on chauvinistic. While it's intended to be doting, it occasionally comes across as patronizing, especially given Yun Rong's age and power.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may be bothered by the treatment of sensitive topics, such as abuse, being played for laughs in certain parts of the story. Additionally, the ending raises several questions: How did Yun Rong give birth while in a dormant state? How was she able to raise her children for five years without anyone knowing? These inconsistencies detracted from my overall enjoyment.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Who Moved My Mountain" is an enjoyable read, especially if you're looking for something lighthearted and funny. The unique premise and endearing characters make it worth a try, but be prepared for a somewhat abrupt and unsatisfying conclusion. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
