My Thoughts on Jellyfish
"Jellyfish" is definitely a unique read! It's a blend of modern-day China, cultivation, showbiz, and even a touch of the supernatural, all rolled into one. Honestly, it's a wild ride, and whether you enjoy it will likely depend on your tolerance for a bit of organized chaos.
First Impressions
I went into this expecting a heartwarming story about a jellyfish, and while that's partially true, it's so much more than that. The premise is intriguing: spirit beasts and cultivators living among humans in modern society, hiding their powers. The main characters, an ancient jellyfish and a fox actor, are an odd but endearing pair. However, the fox wasn't what I expected. I was hoping for the Jellyfish to be the MC, but it's the fox. I was worried it would be a letdown, but the story kept me entertained.
What Works Well
The novel's greatest strength is its humor and lightheartedness. The interactions between the characters are genuinely funny, and the plot is unpredictable in a good way. I also appreciated the lack of excessive face-slapping and overly arrogant characters, a refreshing change from some xianxia stories. The world-building, while a bit loose, is imaginative and creates a fun backdrop for the story. Many readers praised the unique setting and the author's ability to blend seemingly disparate elements into a cohesive narrative.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall experience, I can see why some readers felt let down. The plot can be a bit all over the place, and some plot points seem to be abandoned without proper resolution. The romance, while cute, might not be the main focus for everyone, as the story leans more towards slice-of-life and character interactions. I did find myself wishing for a bit more depth in certain areas, like the MC's past and the intricacies of the cultivation world.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers mentioned a major plot twist involving aliens towards the end, which some found jarring and unnecessary. Also, the mpreg element might not be for everyone. Be warned, the ML hates his child at first but eventually comes around.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Jellyfish" is a fun and engaging read. It's not a deep or meaningful novel, but it's perfect for a lighthearted escape. If you're looking for something unique, funny, and a little bit weird, I'd recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride and don't expect everything to make perfect sense. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
