My Thoughts on Who Allowed You to Get on the Bed
"Who Allowed You to Get on the Bed" is a completed josei novel that I dove into with a mix of curiosity and trepidation, given the range of opinions surrounding it. The story promises a blend of adult themes, drama, and a boss-subordinate dynamic, all wrapped up in a modern setting. While it had its moments, I ultimately found myself agreeing with the consensus that it's a somewhat flawed, yet still engaging, read.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. A strong female lead navigating a complex relationship with her boss, who also happens to be her bodyguard? Sign me up! The early chapters held promise, hinting at a compelling narrative with potential for both emotional depth and steamy encounters. The translation quality was also a pleasant surprise, making the story easy to follow.
What Works Well
The dynamic between the main characters, despite its issues, definitely kept me hooked. I appreciated the female lead's strength and resolve, even when she was clearly blinded by love. The author did a decent job of portraying her internal struggles, making her a relatable, if sometimes frustrating, character. And, I can't deny, the smut scenes were well-written and added a certain spice to the overall experience. Many readers also seemed to enjoy the HEA ending.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel wasn't without its problems. The biggest sticking point for me, and seemingly for many others, was the infamous "other woman" incident. The male lead calling out another woman's name during a pivotal scene felt unnecessary and poorly explained. It introduced a level of melodrama that felt forced and detracted from the overall story. I also felt that the male lead's character could have been better developed. His motivations were often unclear, and his actions sometimes bordered on frustratingly dense. The ending, while happy, felt somewhat rushed and unsatisfying, leaving me wanting more in terms of character growth and resolution of conflicts.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
- The male lead calls out another woman's name (Fifth Miss) when sleeping with the female lead.
- The female lead becomes pregnant and leaves, before eventually reconciling with the male lead.
- The main characters end up back at the mansion, despite the dangers involved.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Who Allowed You to Get on the Bed" is a mixed bag. While it offers some enjoyable moments and a satisfying conclusion, it's ultimately hampered by its plot holes, character inconsistencies, and reliance on tired tropes. I'd recommend it as a passable read if you're looking for a quick and steamy romance with a healthy dose of drama, but don't expect a literary masterpiece. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars.
