My Thoughts on Welcome, to the Bad End Route ~Looks Like It’s Heading Towards a Bad End, so I’ll Take the Harem End Route Instead~
This web novel offers a unique twist on the familiar galgame setup. I went in expecting the usual wish-fulfillment story, but I was pleasantly surprised to find something far more engaging and, at times, unsettling. It's a story that sticks with you, prompting reflection on free will and the nature of choice.
First Impressions
The premise is immediately intriguing. We're in a world that feels like a dating sim, but our protagonist isn't the destined hero. Instead, he's the guy who picks up the pieces when the "main" character makes all the wrong choices, seemingly destined for a bad ending. The creepiness factor is definitely present, especially in the beginning as you try to understand the rules of this world.
What Works Well
I really appreciated the well-developed characters, each with their own quirks and backstories. It's not just a shallow collection of waifus; the author clearly put thought into making them feel like individuals. The way the MC interacts with the heroines is also a strong point. He's proactive in bettering himself, and his motivations extend beyond simply chasing after girls. His dream of following in his father's footsteps and developing a panacea adds a layer of depth that I found compelling. The unique perspective of seeing the world through the eyes of a character who feels like he's being controlled is fascinating. It creates a sense of unease and mystery that kept me hooked.
Areas of Concern
The first two heroines feel somewhat underdeveloped compared to the latter ones. The story progresses quickly, and it can feel a little artificial at times, especially regarding the ease with which the MC "steals" the girls. Also, some readers might find the premise of the MC's actions being controlled unsettling or hard to connect with.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
(Proceed with caution if you haven't read the novel)
Some readers expressed disappointment that Akane wasn't explicitly included in the harem. Also, the ending might feel a bit too convenient or artificial for some, as the heroines readily accept the harem situation. The nature of the MC's "controller" remains ambiguous, which might frustrate readers seeking concrete answers.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Welcome, to the Bad End Route" is a refreshing and surprisingly well-executed take on the harem genre. Despite some minor flaws, the unique premise, engaging characters, and thought-provoking themes make it a worthwhile read. If you're looking for something different and don't mind a bit of creepiness, I'd definitely recommend giving this novel a try. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
