My Thoughts on Wait, How Did My Digital Girlfriend Become a Sword Immortal?
This novel has been quite the ride, and I've got some mixed feelings about it. The premise is undeniably intriguing: a guy with terminal cancer finds himself entangled with a digital girlfriend who's somehow becoming a sword immortal. It's a blend of genres that initially hooked me, but the execution isn't always perfect.
First Impressions
I was initially drawn in by the lighthearted and somewhat absurd setup. The main character's initial denseness, his inability to recognize the supernatural events happening around him, was played for comedic effect. He writes it off as the game developers being too immersive. This aspect, while amusing at first, started to wear thin after a while.
What Works Well
The interactions between the MC and his "digital girlfriend" are definitely a highlight. Seeing their relationship develop, especially from her perspective as she navigates her own world and cultivation, is genuinely heartwarming and funny. The story shines when it focuses on their individual growth and their connection across realms. The world-building, while not groundbreaking, is interesting enough to keep me invested, particularly the mystery surrounding the phone that connects the MC to his girlfriend.
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest issues is the pacing. The story progresses at a snail's pace, spending a lot of time on two different perspectives. The MC's initial denseness, while funny at first, overstays its welcome. It feels like the author drags out the misunderstandings for too long, and it becomes frustrating. Furthermore, the power scaling feels unbalanced, with the female lead often overshadowing the MC.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
The following contains a minor spoiler related to a recurring comedic element:
I also found the reliance on certain comedic tropes, like the game "stealing" items from antagonists' warehouses, to be repetitive after a while. While initially amusing, the joke loses its impact with each repetition.
Final Verdict
"Wait, How Did My Digital Girlfriend Become a Sword Immortal?" has a lot of potential, but it's held back by pacing issues, overused tropes, and a protagonist who can be frustratingly dense. Despite its flaws, the core concept and the sweet, funny interactions between the main characters kept me somewhat engaged. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with a unique premise and don't mind a slow burn, this might be worth checking out. However, be prepared for some frustrating moments along the way. I'm giving it a tentative 3.5/5.
