My Thoughts on This Male Was Forced To Support His Family
"This Male Was Forced To Support His Family" certainly took me on a wild ride. Going in, I expected a lighthearted, fluffy Zerg romance, but what I found was a story with surprising depth and emotional complexity. I'm still sorting through all my feelings, which is always a sign of a good read!
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably intriguing: a world where females are dominant and males are valued primarily for their reproductive capabilities. Our MC, Gu Yu, is a self-proclaimed "rice bug" perfectly content with this setup, until circumstances force him to become the provider for his injured and possibly infertile Marshal wife, Lu Chen. I was immediately drawn in by the reversal of traditional gender roles and the potential for exploring societal expectations.
What Works Well
The heart of this novel is undoubtedly the relationship between Gu Yu and Lu Chen. Their devotion to each other is incredibly touching, especially within a society that often encourages polygamy for males. I loved seeing Gu Yu's growth as he defied societal norms and fought for his right to stay with the woman he loved. The early romance is sweet, and their bond deepens as they face external pressures and internal conflicts.
The world-building is also well-executed. While the initial setup seems straightforward, the author delves into the nuances of the Zerg society, exploring the inequalities and power dynamics that exist beneath the surface. The story doesn't shy away from darker themes, adding layers of complexity and emotional weight to the narrative.
Areas of Concern
While I mostly enjoyed the novel, the ending did feel somewhat rushed. Certain plot points could have benefited from more development, and the resolution of some conflicts felt a bit too convenient. Some readers may find the "dog blood drama" towards the end off-putting.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviews mentioned potentially upsetting side stories, particularly the tragic love story between Randall and Meng Liu and Gu Xiu and the tragic past of Yin and Fu. If you're sensitive to such themes, you might want to approach these parts with caution.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "This Male Was Forced To Support His Family" is a compelling and thought-provoking Zerg novel. The strong character development, the unique premise, and the central loving relationship make it a worthwhile read. If you're looking for a romance that challenges societal norms and explores deeper themes, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared for a few emotional punches along the way!
