My Thoughts on Thinking of Deer Fei Fei
"Thinking of Deer Fei Fei" is a delightful confection, a sugary sweet story that left me grinning from ear to ear. I dove into this novel expecting a light-hearted read, and it delivered in spades. If you're looking for something fluffy, funny, and utterly charming, this might be right up your alley.
First Impressions
The premise immediately hooked me. A naive, slightly awkward idol trainee with a heart of gold and a serious fanboy obsession? Sign me up! The setup is simple: Fei Chang, our MC, is head-over-heels for the famous idol Chen Yue Yang. A chance encounter throws them together, and their journey begins. I was immediately charmed by Fei Chang's earnestness and Chen Yue Yang's subtle but undeniable doting behavior.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a standout. Fei Chang's inner monologues and reactions had me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. The author does a fantastic job of creating comedic situations that feel natural and not forced. I especially enjoyed the running gag with Fei Chang's "little giraffe," if you know what I mean.
The romance is also incredibly sweet. Chen Yue Yang is the perfect doting partner, always looking out for Fei Chang's well-being. Their interactions are heartwarming and full of gentle teasing. I also appreciated that the story hints at a reversible relationship, which is a refreshing change of pace. The dynamic between the two is very cute and the author's writing style is unique and well translated.
Areas of Concern
Honestly, my biggest complaint is that it's too short! I was left wanting more of these characters and their adorable relationship. While the brevity keeps the story from dragging, I felt like some aspects, particularly the development of the ML's feelings, could have been explored further. The plot can be a bit simple, but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk about the spice level, or rather, the lack thereof. While the story is tagged as yaoi, it's very fade-to-black. If you're looking for explicit scenes, you won't find them here. Also, some may feel let down by the fact that the story ends right when they get into a relationship and were preparing to have their first time.
Final Verdict
Despite its short length and lack of explicit content, "Thinking of Deer Fei Fei" is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It's a sweet, fluffy, and hilarious story that will leave you with a smile on your face. If you're looking for a light-hearted escape, I highly recommend giving this one a try. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
