My Thoughts on The Scum Gong Begs Me to Get Back Together, but I Just Want to Get Rich
This title definitely grabbed my attention, and I dove in ready for a wild ride of rebirth, regret, and riches. While the novel delivered on those fronts, my overall experience was a bit more complicated than I initially anticipated.
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably compelling: a protagonist (Jiang Xiao) reborn after a tragic life where he was neglected by his CEO lover (Lin Chengyu). Armed with the knowledge of his past, Jiang Xiao vows to focus on building a successful business and avoiding the pitfalls of love. The opening chapters are heart-wrenching, immediately establishing the 'scum gong' status of the ML and making you root for the MC's success.
What Works Well
I was particularly drawn to Jiang Xiao's character. He's portrayed as intelligent, kind, and determined, making his journey of building a business from the ground up incredibly engaging. The business aspects of the story were well-developed and interesting, especially in the early stages.
Also, the fact that the MC explores relationships with other people after his rebirth is a refreshing change from the usual tropes. These relationships provide him with healing and support, and I appreciated that they weren't simply plot devices to torture the ML. It's a mature way of dealing with the trauma of the past and how to respect himself again.
Lin Chengyu's redemption arc, while controversial among readers, was undeniably well-written. Watching him grapple with the consequences of his past actions and slowly evolve as a person was both painful and compelling. The author successfully made me feel sympathy for him, even when I initially wanted to throw my e-reader at the wall.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel also has its drawbacks. The length can feel excessive, and the constant angst can become emotionally draining. I also found the ML's obsessive behavior at times unsettling. Some readers may find it difficult to root for a reunion between the MC and ML, considering the power imbalance and the deep-seated issues from their previous life.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers expressed dissatisfaction with the ending, where the MC and ML ultimately reconcile. Some felt that Lin Chengyu didn't deserve forgiveness, while others believed that Jiang Xiao deserved someone better. The ML's actions in the past life are considered unforgivable by some readers.
Final Verdict
The Scum Gong Begs Me to Get Back Together, but I Just Want to Get Rich is a complex and emotionally charged novel. It offers a compelling premise, well-developed characters, and a satisfying redemption arc (depending on your perspective). However, be prepared for a long and angsty journey, and be aware that the ending may not appeal to all readers. Ultimately, it's a worthwhile read for those who enjoy the "wife-chasing crematorium" trope, but proceed with caution.
