My Thoughts on The Palaces of the Twelve Sacred Beasts
"The Palaces of the Twelve Sacred Beasts" is definitely a web novel that leaves a lasting impression, though whether that impression is good or bad seems to depend heavily on individual taste. I dove in knowing it was a wild ride, and it certainly delivered on that promise.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the story throws you into a world filled with danger and, shall we say, intense interactions. Our protagonist, Gu Ting Yu, a veterinarian with a crippling fear of animals, finds himself transported to a fantastical realm where he must journey through the Palaces of the Twelve Sacred Beasts. The initial chapters are a shock to the system, with depictions of cruelty and non-consensual acts that might be a deal-breaker for many readers.
What Works Well
Despite the controversial content, I found myself drawn to the underlying narrative. The concept of taming these powerful, often tormented, beasts is compelling. Many readers praised the unique backstories of each beast, and I agree that the author does a decent job of justifying their actions and, eventually, making them sympathetic. The story definitely has a dark, fantastical element that can be both magical and horrific, creating a unique reading experience.
