My Thoughts on The Decade of Deep Love
"The Decade of Deep Love" is an emotional rollercoaster that left me reeling, and I suspect it will do the same for anyone who dares to pick it up. It's not a light read, but it's definitely a story that sticks with you long after you finish.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew this was going to be a heavy hitter. The tags alone – adult, drama, mature, psychological, tragedy, yaoi – paint a clear picture. It's a story about love, loss, and the messy realities of long-term relationships. I was prepared for tears, and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed... in the sense that tears were shed.
What Works Well
The raw emotion is the novel's strongest point. The author doesn't shy away from portraying the painful realities of a toxic relationship, and the characters' struggles feel incredibly real. Many readers praised the character of He Zhishu, the MC, for his resilience in the face of adversity. Even though I, and many others, wanted to shake him and tell him to leave the ML, Jiang Wenxu, I could also understand his attachment and dependency, built over fifteen years. The second ML, Ai Ziyu, is a breath of fresh air, offering genuine care and support to Zhishu in his final days. While his love might seem sudden, it provides a much-needed contrast to the toxic dynamic between Zhishu and Wenxu. The novel also excels at showing the consequences of Wenxu's actions. He's not let off the hook, and his eventual regret feels earned, even if it's too late.
Areas of Concern
The ML, Jiang Wenxu, is a difficult character to stomach. His cheating, abuse, and selfishness are major points of contention. While some readers found his flaws realistic, others found him irredeemable. I can definitely see both sides. Also, while the tragedy genre is definitely what the author was going for, the counterattack by the MC left something to be desired. It's a very painful read, and some readers may find it too emotionally draining.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here comes the spoiler zone. Be warned! A major point of contention is the ending itself. Zhishu's death is a heartbreaking culmination of years of suffering. While some find it fitting, others wished for a different outcome, perhaps one where Zhishu finds true happiness with Ai Ziyu. Wenxu's late repentance also divides readers. Some find it a fitting consequence, while others believe he doesn't deserve any sympathy.
Final Verdict
"The Decade of Deep Love" is a powerful and emotionally charged novel that explores the complexities of love, loss, and regret. It's not an easy read, and it will likely leave you with a lingering sense of sadness. However, if you're looking for a story that will make you think and feel deeply, this might be the one for you. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Just be sure to have tissues on hand!
