My Thoughts on The Cold Regent Keeps a Fox as a Consort
"The Cold Regent Keeps a Fox as a Consort" promised a delightful blend of comedy, romance, and supernatural elements, and while it delivered on some fronts, I found myself ultimately conflicted. The novel certainly has its charms, but some significant issues prevented me from fully enjoying the experience.
First Impressions
The initial chapters drew me in with the novelty of a transmigrated protagonist finding herself in the body of a fox cub. The potential for fluffy cuteness and fish-out-of-water scenarios seemed immense, and I was eager to see how the story would unfold. The early interactions and world-building were intriguing, setting the stage for what I hoped would be a lighthearted and engaging read.
What Works Well
I can appreciate the humor woven into the narrative. The situations the fox MC finds herself in are often absurd, leading to some genuinely funny moments. The author does a decent job of portraying the animalistic aspects of the protagonist, balancing it with her retained human consciousness. I also found the initial mystery surrounding the world and the characters compelling enough to keep me reading for a while. Some readers who made it further into the story praised the plot twists and turns, finding the raw version exciting and difficult to put down, though I didn't make it that far myself.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the main character. While the premise of a fox MC is appealing, her personality grated on me after a while. I found myself struggling to connect with her, and at times, her actions felt inconsistent and illogical. Several readers shared this sentiment, finding her to be frustratingly dense and prone to making the same mistakes repeatedly. Some even went as far as to call her "lame" and "idiotic", which, while harsh, does reflect the level of annoyance she seems to inspire in some.
Another point of contention is the reverse harem aspect. While some readers might enjoy this, I felt that the romantic interests fell for the MC too easily, based on shallow reasons. The relationships felt underdeveloped and lacked the depth needed to make them truly engaging.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have pointed out a particularly disturbing scene involving a mother wolf and her cub. Apparently, the MC benefits from the mother wolf's milk at the expense of the starving cub, which understandably left a sour taste in many readers' mouths. This incident, along with other instances of questionable behavior, made it difficult for me to root for the protagonist.
Final Verdict
"The Cold Regent Keeps a Fox as a Consort" has potential, but ultimately falls short due to its flawed protagonist and underdeveloped relationships. While the humor and initial premise are appealing, the frustrating character decisions and questionable plot points make it a difficult read to recommend wholeheartedly. If you're willing to suspend your disbelief and overlook the MC's shortcomings, you might find some enjoyment in the fluffy cuteness and comedic moments, but be prepared for a potentially frustrating experience. For me, the negatives outweighed the positives, resulting in a somewhat disappointing read.
