This novel, The #1 Pretty Boy of the Immortal Path, certainly took me on a journey! With its blend of xianxia, romance, comedy, and a dash of mystery, it's a story that tries to be many things at once, and for the most part, it succeeds.

Initially, I was drawn in by the seemingly lighthearted synopsis. The premise of mistaken identities and a 'pretty boy' MC navigating the immortal path sounded like a fun, fluffy read. However, I quickly discovered that there's a lot more depth beneath the surface. Be prepared, this story has a serious plot.
What Works Well
The world-building is definitely a strong point. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the xianxia setting, exploring the philosophy of the Dao and the intricacies of cultivation. I was impressed by the complex and tragic nature of the ML, Ling Fengxiao. His internal struggles and the burdens he carries make him a compelling character, and his devotion to the MC is genuinely touching. The romantic development between the leads is slow-burn, but satisfying. Their relationship feels realistic and humane, with both characters growing and evolving as they navigate their feelings for each other. The prose, especially during fight scenes, is beautiful and captivating.

While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find some aspects less appealing. The MC, Lin Shu, can come across as passive and emotionally detached at times. I can see how some readers might find his character development lacking, as his personality is influenced by a ruthless Dao, which makes him indifferent to everything. Also, I do have to acknowledge the concerns raised about a particular scene involving the leads' child. I can understand how this could be interpreted as transphobic and deeply upsetting.
