My Thoughts on Slowly Turning Protagonist to the Dark Side
"Slowly Turning Protagonist to the Dark Side" is quite the rollercoaster! I jumped in expecting a dark transmigration story, and while it delivers on some fronts, it definitely has its ups and downs. It's a cultivation novel with a unique premise, but be prepared for a potentially bumpy ride.
First Impressions
The initial chapters grabbed my attention. The concept of the MC transmigrating into the body of the original villain, especially while the original is still somewhat present, is intriguing. There's a certain appeal to the MC trying to navigate this precarious situation, trying to prevent the villain's tragic end while dealing with the original's memories and desires. It definitely hooked me in the beginning.
What Works Well
I appreciated the MC's character development. He's not an overpowered Gary Stu, which is refreshing. He struggles, makes mistakes, and genuinely tries to survive and protect those he cares about. I also liked that he retains some villainous traits, which felt realistic considering his circumstances. The ML is also a good character, honest and kind, and their relationship is a definite plus, with the ML falling first. The world-building is also quite detailed.
Areas of Concern
While the beginning was strong, I found myself losing interest as the story progressed. The cultivation grind can get repetitive. The pacing felt off, with numerous time skips that made the relationship between the MC and ML feel somewhat shallow. The ending also seems rushed, with important plot points glossed over. I also found the author's world building to be tedious at times.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed disappointment with the ending, particularly a plot twist involving the MC waking up in his original body in an apocalypse world, which felt unresolved and created a significant plot hole. Also, the mpreg element, while explained, might not be for everyone.
Final Verdict
"Slowly Turning Protagonist to the Dark Side" has a lot of potential. The unique premise, engaging characters, and detailed world-building are definitely strengths. However, the pacing issues, rushed ending, and some unresolved plot points hold it back. If you're a fan of cultivation novels with a dark twist and are willing to overlook some flaws, it might be worth a read. Just be aware that the journey might be more enjoyable than the destination. I would give it a 3/5.
