My Thoughts on Silent Lover
"Silent Lover" promised a dramatic, mature romance set in ancient China, and it certainly delivered on the drama. I went in knowing it was a tragedy with a mute protagonist, and I definitely got that. This novel takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, and while it wasn't always a smooth ride, it left a lasting impression.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were intense. The story throws you right into the MC's difficult life as a mute slave, and the challenges he faces are immediately apparent. I was intrigued by the premise of a mute character navigating the complexities of court life, especially given the tags like "abusive characters" and "cruel characters." I knew going in that it wouldn't be a light read.
What Works Well
I found the character growth, particularly of the MC, to be compelling. Despite the abuse he endures, he slowly develops a sense of self-worth, which I appreciated. The world-building, set against the backdrop of ancient China, was also well-done. It's clear the author put thought into crafting a believable, albeit harsh, historical setting. I also found the unique challenges that the mute MC faces to be an interesting twist.
Areas of Concern
The ML's behavior is definitely a sticking point. The "abusive characters" tag is no joke, and I can see why some readers found his actions unforgivable. While the story attempts to redeem him later on, I'm not sure it entirely succeeds. The rapid shift in his personality felt a bit jarring to me, and it stretched my suspension of disbelief. Also, there are definitely some "dog blood" elements, as some readers have pointed out, that might not appeal to everyone.
