My Thoughts on Seeing All Layers of the Clouds
"Seeing All Layers of the Clouds" is a short but impactful yaoi novel that I found surprisingly moving. It's a story about heartbreak, healing, and finding love again in unexpected places. While the premise initially gave me pause, the execution won me over.
First Impressions
The setup is definitely unique: the protagonist, Song Yunshen, discovers his long-term boyfriend cheating on him with none other than his new boss, Lin Wanghe. This immediately throws the characters into a complicated situation, and I was curious to see how the author would navigate the fallout. Some readers found Lin Wanghe's initial actions a bit "stalker-ish," which is understandable. I can see how his intense interest in Song Yunshen could be interpreted that way early on.
What Works Well
What truly shines is the novel's exploration of emotional recovery. I really appreciated the realistic portrayal of Song Yunshen's internal struggles as he grapples with the betrayal and tries to move on. The author doesn't shy away from depicting the pain and doubts that come with ending a long-term relationship and opening yourself up to someone new. The novel also contrasts a toxic, one-sided relationship with a healthy, mature one, highlighting the importance of mutual support and understanding. Lin Wanghe's character growth is also a standout, evolving into a devoted and supportive partner. Many readers praised his maturity and unwavering affection for Song Yunshen, despite their age gap and different backgrounds. The writing style is beautiful and poetic, adding to the overall emotional depth of the story. It’s clear the translator did an excellent job preserving the spirit of the original work.
Areas of Concern
One reader had significant issues with the early plot points, particularly the MC's reaction to the cheating and the ML's initial behavior, even going so far as to call it "disgusting." While I do not personally share that opinion, it is a sentiment that should be acknowledged.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's address some potential spoilers. Some readers might be put off by the fact that the ML and MC end up together after the ex-boyfriend cheated with the ML. Also, the ML does some questionable things at the start, like lying about who he is.
Final Verdict
Despite my initial reservations and those of other readers, "Seeing All Layers of the Clouds" ultimately won me over. It's a beautifully written and emotionally resonant story about finding love and healing after heartbreak. While the initial setup might not appeal to everyone, I encourage you to give it a chance if you're looking for a mature and thoughtful romance. I'm giving it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
