My Thoughts on Sacrifice to the Devil
"Sacrifice to the Devil" promised a dark romance with a supernatural twist, and while it delivered on some fronts, it left me with mixed feelings. It's a relatively quick read, and I can see why it has garnered a decent following, but it's not without its flaws.
First Impressions
Going into this novel, I was expecting a more intense and disturbing story, given the title and tags. The initial chapters certainly hinted at a power imbalance and a potentially abusive dynamic between the MC and ML. The male lead's actions are a bit questionable, and he does threaten the MC to stay with him. However, I found that it quickly mellowed out into a more standard romance, which was a bit of a letdown, as I was anticipating something darker.
What Works Well
Despite my initial disappointment, I did find aspects of the story enjoyable. The reincarnation theme is well-executed, and I was genuinely curious about the characters' past lives and how their relationship would unfold. The plot moves at a brisk pace, keeping me engaged, and the mystery surrounding the MC's lost memories was intriguing. Also, many people praised the ML's character development, noting that he regretted his initial behavior and became more caring and respectful as the story progressed. I also liked that the misunderstandings were cleared up at a decent pace. The story also has a good balance of humor and fluff in the later chapters.
Areas of Concern
While the shift to a sweeter romance was welcomed by some, I feel it detracted from the initial premise. The horror elements were minimal, and the world-building felt somewhat lacking. I would have liked to see more depth in the characters and their relationships, particularly with supporting characters.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the MC's "bad luck life" is related to his separation from the ML. It's also implied that he was gaining memories by releasing spirits with the help of a Daoist priest, but this plot point was not fully explored.
Final Verdict
"Sacrifice to the Devil" is a decent read if you're looking for a short, relatively light supernatural romance with a bit of mystery. However, if you're expecting a dark, intense story with significant horror elements, you might be disappointed. While it has its flaws, the overall plot is engaging, and the characters are likeable enough to keep you invested. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
