My Thoughts on Rescue the Beautiful, Strong and Miserable Male Protagonist
This novel took me on a rollercoaster! "Rescue the Beautiful, Strong and Miserable Male Protagonist" is a wild ride of reincarnation, revenge, and redemption, and I can definitely see why it has garnered so much attention. It's not a light read by any means, but it's incredibly compelling.
First Impressions
Initially, the premise grabbed me: a protagonist stuck in a time loop, reliving the same tragic story, finally breaking free to change the fate of a miserable male lead. The dark themes and heavy tags like "betrayal," "child abuse," and "gore" definitely set the stage for an intense experience.
What Works Well
The character development is a standout. The MC, Mi Lu, is refreshingly human. He's not a saint, but he's not a monster either. His internal struggles and gradual shift from wanting to escape the loop to genuinely caring for the ML, Hulu Yan, felt authentic. Hulu Yan himself is a complex character, shaped by immense suffering, and his slow journey toward healing is captivating. I found their relationship, though initially uncomfortable due to age differences which were handled very well, became a really heartwarming aspect of the story. The author did a great job portraying the ML's possessiveness without making it overtly toxic. I also appreciated the fact that the MC has no system to rely on. His struggles felt real and made his accomplishments all the more satisfying.
Areas of Concern
The pacing can be slow at times, and there are moments when side characters get too much screen time. Also, the world-building is slightly lacking. However, I feel that the focus is on the characters and their relationships, which made it easy to overlook the shortcomings.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's delve into some spoiler-y bits. Several reviewers mentioned the ML's traumatic past, including instances of abuse and mutilation. Also, the ending can feel a bit open-ended, but apparently, the extra chapters provide a more conclusive and hopeful resolution.
Final Verdict
Despite its dark themes and occasional pacing issues, "Rescue the Beautiful, Strong and Miserable Male Protagonist" is a truly gripping novel. The complex characters, the emotional depth, and the ultimate message of hope make it a worthwhile read. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Be prepared for some angst, but also for a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading.
