My Thoughts on Reborn as the Villain President’s Cat & Dog
"Reborn as the Villain President’s Cat & Dog" is a novel I dove into with a mix of curiosity and excitement, given its blend of fantasy, romance, and shounen ai elements. The premise alone is intriguing – a rebirth story with a twist of animal transformations and showbiz drama. While it wasn't without its flaws, I found it to be a generally enjoyable and fluffy read.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the idea of a "villain" being reborn, but the story quickly revealed itself to be less about vengeance and more about second chances. The main character, Wen Mingyi, is reborn into his younger self after a less-than-ideal first life. Discovering his world is a novel, he sets out to avoid his previous tragic end and protect his beloved brother, Si Junduo.
What Works Well
One aspect that consistently stood out to me was the character of Si Junduo, the male lead. He's a breath of fresh air compared to the typical domineering CEO. His devotion to Wen Mingyi is unwavering, and his selfless nature is genuinely heartwarming. He's incredibly understanding and always puts Wen Mingyi's feelings first, even leaving him an "out" in their relationship if he ever regrets it. I also enjoyed the showbiz elements, and the author does a good job building up emotional scenes. The MC's parents recognized their past neglect and actively tried to redeem themselves.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story, some aspects could have been better developed. Wen Mingyi's character, while growing throughout the story, can be a bit grating at times. He tends to blame the "plot" for his actions, which can feel like a cop-out. The cat and dog transformation, a central element in the beginning, felt somewhat abandoned later on. The reason for the transformation is never explained. Additionally, the resolution of the MC's parental neglect felt a little too rushed and glossed over.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be sensitive to spoilers, so I'll mark this section accordingly. Several readers have noted the "villain" Jiang Zimo isn't wholly unsympathetic. He's portrayed as a product of circumstance, driven by jealousy and a difficult background. Also, the MC's parents neglect, which is lightly brushed over.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Reborn as the Villain President’s Cat & Dog" is a sweet and fluffy read that I would recommend if you're looking for something light and heartwarming. While the MC can be frustrating at times, the ML's devotion and the story's overall positive tone make it an enjoyable experience. Just don't go in expecting a deep, complex plot, and you'll likely find yourself charmed by this sweet tale of second chances and brotherly love.
