My Thoughts on Rebirth: Design Your Life
"Rebirth: Design Your Life" is a rollercoaster of emotions, a bitter coffee with a surprisingly great aftertaste. I went into this novel expecting one thing and came out feeling something entirely different, and honestly, I loved the journey. It's not a lighthearted read, but it's a compelling exploration of trauma, self-destruction, and the long, arduous path to healing.
First Impressions
The premise grabbed me immediately: successful designer Gao Xi's perfect life shatters when he discovers his partner cheating. Reborn as Shen Yun, a young, struggling designer, he's a shadow of his former self, driven by a desire for destruction more than revenge. This isn't your typical feel-good rebirth story, and I appreciated that. The initial setup is dark and gritty, and it sets the stage for a complex character study.
What Works Well
The character development is definitely a strong point. Both Gao Xi/Shen Yun and the ML are deeply flawed individuals, and their relationship is anything but smooth. It's a battle of wills, a push and pull that kept me hooked. I found myself rooting for them despite their flaws, and the author does a great job of showing the slow burn as they gradually break down each other's walls.
I also enjoyed the exploration of the design world. It added another layer to the story and made Gao Xi/Shen Yun's struggles feel more real. The revenge plot, while not the primary focus, was satisfying enough, and I felt the fate of the ex-boyfriend was fitting. The family dynamics, especially those involving the MC's family in both lives, were also touching, even if their appearances were brief.
Areas of Concern
While I generally enjoyed the story, I can see why some might find the ML problematic. He's definitely not the pampering type, and his initial relationship with the MC is based on a transactional dynamic that could be off-putting to some. Also, some of the plot points felt a bit contrived.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have mentioned a "misunderstanding" regarding the cheating incident, where the ex-boyfriend was allegedly seduced while drunk. This revelation may lessen the impact of the revenge plot for some readers.
Final Verdict
Despite its darker themes and flawed characters, "Rebirth: Design Your Life" is a worthwhile read. It's a story about two broken souls finding solace in each other, even if their journey is messy and unconventional. If you're looking for a sugary sweet romance, this isn't it. But if you're willing to delve into a complex and emotionally charged story, I highly recommend giving it a try. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
