My Thoughts on Read But Not Replied
"Read But Not Replied" is a web novel that took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. It's a mature romance, a coming-of-age story, and a dive into the complexities of relationships, all wrapped in a modern setting. While it's not without its flaws, it left a lasting impression.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew I was signing up for some angst, but I wasn't quite prepared for the level of miscommunication. The premise of an arranged marriage between an omega and an alpha, with a significant age gap, immediately hooked me. I was eager to see how the characters would navigate their feelings and the societal expectations placed upon them.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the character development, especially for Qin Bao, the MC. He starts as a young man grappling with complex emotions, societal pressures, and a developing crush on Feng Chengyu, the ML. Watching him mature and come to terms with his feelings was rewarding. I also found the world-building to be well-developed, creating a believable backdrop for the story. The author did a good job of portraying the internal conflicts of both characters, making it difficult to truly fault either of them for their actions. I particularly enjoyed the moments of intimacy, both emotional and physical, between the two leads. The chemistry was palpable, and the author did a great job of conveying their mutual attraction despite the communication barriers.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue for me was the prolonged misunderstandings between the MC and ML. While I understand that this is a common trope, it sometimes felt dragged out, leading to unnecessary angst. It was frustrating to see them circling each other, unable to express their true feelings. It was also hard to believe that the MC brushed off the pain he caused the ML just because he felt sorry.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
There are some spoilers below, so proceed with caution if you haven't read the novel yet.
One of the criticisms I saw was about the ML's decision not to immediately confess his feelings. While I understand the argument that he wanted to avoid a power imbalance, it did contribute to the overall sense of frustration. Also, the plot point of MC's father being jailed and his torn feelings towards the ML needed more nuance.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Read But Not Replied" is a compelling story with well-developed characters and a captivating plot. If you enjoy mature romances with a healthy dose of angst and are willing to invest in the characters' emotional journey, I recommend giving this novel a try. Just be prepared for some frustrating moments along the way. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
