My Thoughts on Pure and Innocent Landowner
"Pure and Innocent Landowner" is quite the rollercoaster. Buckle up, because this short story throws you into a whirlwind romance between a modern woman and a, well, supposedly pure landowner from ancient China. I went in expecting a fluffy and lighthearted read, and while it definitely has its moments, it also left me scratching my head at times.
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably intriguing. A time-traveling protagonist meeting a naive landowner? It sounds like a recipe for charming misunderstandings and comedic situations. And to be fair, there are glimpses of that. The initial meeting is certainly… memorable, and the idea of a "beast in bed" ML has its appeal.
What Works Well
For a quick read, it does manage to establish the core relationship fairly quickly. Some readers seemed to really enjoy the ML's "simp" tendencies and the FL's boldness, finding their dynamic cute and engaging. The "no drama" aspect also appealed to some, offering a brief escape into a simpler romance. I can see the appeal of a short, fluffy novel to breeze through, especially when craving something light on plot and heavy on… other things. The ending, with the ML giving up his life to join the FL in the modern world, is a unique twist that some found refreshing.
Areas of Concern
However, there are definitely aspects that didn't quite land for me. The plot felt incredibly rushed and, at times, nonsensical. The reasons for the time travel and subsequent events felt flimsy and poorly explained. I found the characters' reactions and motivations inconsistent, making it hard to fully invest in their relationship.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers pointed out a particularly troubling scene involving sexual assault. The abruptness of the situation, the sudden shift in the FL's reaction, and the lack of proper resolution made it feel jarring and uncomfortable. This definitely detracted from the overall enjoyment and raised serious questions about the portrayal of consent. I also agree that the ending, while unique, felt somewhat irresponsible. The ML abandoning his entire life and responsibilities seemed like a convenient way to resolve the plot, but it lacked depth and consideration.
Final Verdict
"Pure and Innocent Landowner" is a mixed bag. While it offers a quick and potentially entertaining escape with a charming premise and some cute moments, the rushed plot, inconsistent characterization, and problematic scenes ultimately hold it back. If you're looking for a short, smutty read with a heavy emphasis on "nonsense," you might find something to enjoy here. However, be prepared for a bumpy ride and proceed with caution, especially considering the issues surrounding consent. I'd personally give it a 2.5/5.
