My Thoughts on Pheromone Recognition Disorder
"Pheromone Recognition Disorder" is quite the ride! It's a blend of sci-fi, mecha action, mystery, and romance, with a good dose of humor thrown in. I went in expecting a fun Zerg ABO story, and while it definitely delivered on that front, it also surprised me with its depth and intricate world-building.
First Impressions
Right from the start, I was drawn into the world the author created. The initial chapters hooked me with the mystery surrounding the amnesiac gong and the low-key genius shou. I was immediately invested in their relationship and eager to see how their dynamic would unfold. I also found the initial interactions quite funny, especially the "in heat" tension between the main couple, which definitely made me laugh.
What Works Well
The novel excels in several areas. The plot is engaging, with plenty of action, conspiracies, and hidden stories to keep you guessing. I appreciated how the author gradually revealed the characters' backstories, adding layers to the overall narrative. The side characters were also well-developed, and I found myself invested in their fates as well.
The main couple's relationship is a highlight, being supportive, healthy, and free of unnecessary drama. Many readers praised the lack of miscommunication, which can be a common pitfall in BL novels. The character growth, especially the shou's journey from a protected young master to a strong, independent individual, was also well-executed. I also found the world-building to be particularly strong, with many readers praising the novel's unique take on the Zerg universe.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, there were a few aspects that gave me pause. Some readers found the writing style a bit disruptive, with frequent flashbacks and repetition of information. I can see how this could interrupt the flow and become tiring over time. Additionally, a few readers found the main couple's dynamic somewhat bland compared to the side couples, who had more angsty and compelling relationships.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed disappointment with the tragic endings of several side couples, which contrasted sharply with the main couple's happy ending. While these tragedies were foreshadowed and thematically consistent, they might be jarring for readers expecting a lighter, fluffier read. There are also some concerns about the portrayal of alpha x alpha relationships in the story, which some readers found to be negative and problematic.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "Pheromone Recognition Disorder" is a worthwhile read. It offers a compelling plot, well-developed characters, and a unique take on the sci-fi romance genre. If you're looking for an action-packed story with a healthy dose of humor and a satisfying romance, I'd recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared for some potentially heartbreaking moments along the way.
