My Thoughts on Pat Me Please

"Pat Me Please" is a novel that completely took me by surprise. Going in, I knew it was a yuri story with a love triangle, but what I found was so much more complex and emotionally resonant than I anticipated. This isn't just a fluffy romance; it delves into the intricacies of relationships, personal growth, and the messy reality of being human.

First Impressions

Initially, I wasn't sure if I'd stick with it. The main character, Yu Zhou, can be frustrating at times. She's a "giver" type, and I can see how her insecurities and tendency to overthink could annoy some readers. However, as the story progressed, I began to understand her motivations and appreciate her flaws. The translation is smooth and easy to read, which made getting into the story much easier.

What Works Well

The character development is phenomenal. All three main characters – Yu Zhou, Xiang Wan, and Su Chang – are well-fleshed out with their own unique struggles and desires. It's rare to find a novel where every character feels like a real person, but "Pat Me Please" manages to achieve this. I especially loved the dynamic between Yu Zhou and Xiang Wan, which felt like a deep, almost soulmate-like connection. Many readers praised the realistic portrayal of relationships and the exploration of themes like communication, compromise, and self-worth. It's a story that stays with you long after you finish reading. The audio drama industry information was also a surprisingly interesting addition.

Areas of Concern

The love triangle aspect might be a turn-off for some. While I didn't find it as overwhelming as I expected, it's definitely a central element of the plot. There are moments of frustration and heartbreak, especially if you find yourself strongly rooting for one pairing over another. The time travel element felt a little out of place in an otherwise grounded story, but it makes more sense with the sequel.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers felt that the story ultimately prioritizes a passionate but potentially toxic relationship. There's a debate to be had about whether the "right" couple ends up together.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "Pat Me Please" is a worthwhile read. It's a story that tackles complex themes with nuance and emotional depth. If you're looking for a yuri novel that goes beyond surface-level romance and explores the complexities of human relationships, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared for some emotional rollercoaster moments along the way!

Synopsis

After finishing playing mahjong, Yu Zhou, a recently resigned writer, returned home and found a young lady from ancient times, Xiang Wan, who was a former prime minister’s daughter, sitting on her sofa. After some simple communication, Yu Zhou accepted this “roommate” who had traveled through time with her chūnibyō mind. On the other hand, Yu Zhou’s novel was adapted into an audio drama, which was unexpectedly performed by the well-known voice actress Su Chang, causing Yu Zhou to be overjoyed yet also in tears, because Su Chang was her ex-girlfriend. Through their new connections, the girls re-examine their own lives and achieve personal growth. This absurd yet realistic experience may also “pat awake” Yu Zhou’s stagnant love life.
