My Thoughts on Original Flavor and 30% Sweet
"Original Flavor and 30% Sweet" is a short and sweet josei romance that I found to be quite charming. It's a light read, perfect for when you want something fluffy and heartwarming. The story centers around a manga artist with severe social anxiety and her budding relationship with the understanding owner of her favorite milk tea shop.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the premise. A protagonist with crippling social anxiety is something I haven't encountered often, and I was curious to see how the author would handle it. The male lead, with his shoulder-length hair and gentle nature, also piqued my interest from the start.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in its sweetness and the interactions between the main characters. The male lead's patience and acceptance of the female lead's imperfections are definitely highlights. I appreciated that her anxiety wasn't magically cured by his presence; instead, he meets her where she is and encourages her growth at her own pace. The author does a good job of portraying the female lead's anxious thoughts and feelings, making her relatable even if you don't share the same level of social anxiety. The novel is also a quick read, which can be a positive if you're looking for something to enjoy in a single sitting.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I do agree that the ending felt a bit rushed. I was hoping to see more significant progress in the female lead's journey to overcome her anxiety. The story hints at the root of her anxiety stemming from her relationship with her mother, but there isn't a proper resolution to that conflict, which left me wanting more. Also, some might find the male lead's actions to be overbearing.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers expressed disappointment about the lack of closure regarding the female lead's mother. The story only shows her sending a message and receiving a mysterious reply, which many felt was a missed opportunity for a meaningful reconciliation or confrontation.
Final Verdict
Despite its shortcomings, "Original Flavor and 30% Sweet" is a delightful read. If you're looking for a fluffy, low-drama romance with a unique protagonist, I'd recommend giving it a try. Just be aware that the ending might leave you wanting more, and the pacing is a bit fast. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
