"Not in Vain" promised a poignant tale of a merman repaying a life debt in ancient China, and while it had moments that shone, my overall experience was a bit of a mixed bag. It’s a relatively short read, clocking in at around 40 chapters, which is a plus if you're looking for a quick dip into the fantasy romance genre.

First Impressions

The initial premise definitely grabbed me. A fish transforming into a human to help his savior, a disabled young lord? I was ready for some angst and tender moments. The writing style, with its occasional poetic flair, also initially impressed me. I was hoping for a unique and heartfelt story.

What Works Well

The character of Yu Xiaoman, the merman-turned-bride, is undoubtedly the strongest aspect of the novel. His kindness and dedication to Lu Ji, even in the face of adversity, are truly touching. I admired his willingness to defend Lu Ji against his own family, showcasing a strength that grew throughout the story. There were moments of genuine sweetness between the couple, and the plot moved along at a brisk pace. I appreciated that the author didn't drag out the story unnecessarily.

Areas of Concern

However, the romance felt somewhat underdeveloped. I struggled to understand the depth of the connection between Yu Xiaoman and Lu Ji. Lu Ji's character, in particular, left me wanting more. His stoicism often bordered on frustrating, and his tendency to withhold information created unnecessary drama. I also felt that certain plot points were glossed over, leaving me with unanswered questions. The world-building, especially regarding mermaid culture, felt superficial. I was left with a sense that the story could have been so much richer with more detailed exploration.
