My Thoughts on My Evil Imperial Wife is Too Arrogant
I dove into "My Evil Imperial Wife is Too Arrogant" with a healthy dose of skepticism, given the rather…assertive title. What I found was a surprisingly enjoyable, albeit imperfect, xianxia romp. It's definitely a power fantasy, but sometimes that's exactly what I'm in the mood for.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me quickly. Our female lead, Lou Mu Yan, is strong, independent, and unapologetically black-bellied. I appreciated that she wasn't afraid to repay kindness and grudges tenfold. The early face-slapping moments were satisfying, and I found myself eager to see her rise from "trash" to all-rounded genius.
What Works Well
The family dynamics were a major highlight for me. Unlike many cultivation novels bogged down by endless family drama, Lou Mu Yan's family is supportive and loving. This was a refreshing change of pace. I also enjoyed the relationship between Lou Mu Yan and her male lead, Ming Xiu. They're equally strong, and I liked that she rescued him as often as he rescued her. The beast companions added a touch of cuteness and humor, too! I found the translation to be smooth and easy to read, which always enhances the experience.
Areas of Concern
As much as I enjoyed the novel, it wasn't without its flaws. The plot can feel generic at times, following familiar cultivation tropes. I also felt that the romance, while healthy, lacked depth and chemistry. It moved quickly. And while the face-slapping can be satisfying, it does become repetitive. The ending felt rushed, leaving some plot threads unresolved and characters forgotten.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be put off by the mild reverse harem element. While the male extras' feelings are largely one-sided, and Lou Mu Yan remains devoted to Ming Xiu, it’s worth noting that some characters never move on from their feelings for her. I can see how that could be frustrating for readers who prefer a cleaner romantic dynamic.
Final Verdict
Overall, "My Evil Imperial Wife is Too Arrogant" is a fun, lighthearted read that I'd recommend if you're looking for a strong female lead, satisfying face-slapping, and a relatively smooth cultivation journey. Just be aware that it's not groundbreaking literature and has some repetitive elements. If you can overlook those flaws, you might find yourself enjoying it as much as I did. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
