My Thoughts on My Beautiful Teacher
"My Beautiful Teacher" is quite the mixed bag, a modern xianxia that pulls you in with its promise of action, comedy, and a touch of the supernatural. I went in expecting a lighthearted read, and while it delivers on some fronts, it also stumbles in others.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. A down-on-his-luck guy getting mixed up with cultivators, demons, and a whole lot of beautiful women? It sounded like a fun ride. The early chapters had a certain charm, throwing the MC, Qin Chao, into a whirlwind of events that kept me entertained. The blend of Eastern and Western mythologies was also a nice touch, adding a unique flavor to the xianxia genre.
What Works Well
The comedic moments are definitely a highlight. There are parts that genuinely made me laugh, and the character interactions, at their best, are engaging. I also appreciated the pacing; the story moves along at a decent clip, introducing new arcs and challenges to keep things from getting stale. Some readers have praised the unique character traits of the women in the harem, and when the author takes the time to flesh them out, they can be quite enjoyable. The action scenes, when they hit, are also well-done, especially as the MC's powers progress. There's a certain wish-fulfillment aspect to seeing him overcome arrogant adversaries.
Areas of Concern
However, I can't ignore some of the criticisms. The harem, while a selling point for some, felt forced and underdeveloped at times. Some of the female characters seemed to fall for the MC far too easily, lacking depth and feeling like mere additions to the group. The MC's behavior can also be problematic. While he's presented as charming, there are instances where his actions cross the line, and his constant guilt over his expanding harem becomes tiresome. I also found the "damsel in distress" trope overused, and the humor occasionally falls flat, especially when it feels forced into serious situations.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed serious concerns about instances of sexual assault and questionable moral choices made by the MC. These moments understandably soured their experience with the novel.
Final Verdict
"My Beautiful Teacher" is a flawed but ultimately entertaining read. If you're looking for a lighthearted xianxia with plenty of action, comedy, and a large harem, you might find something to enjoy here. However, be prepared for some questionable character choices, underdeveloped characters, and a plot that occasionally meanders. I'd recommend going in with tempered expectations and a willingness to overlook its flaws. I give it a 3/5.
