My Thoughts on Mr. Yuan is Always Unhappy

Mr. Yuan is Always Unhappy is a completed original web novel translated from Chinese, and after diving in, I can see why it has a solid, if not spectacular, 4.1/5 rating. It's a sweet, comedic slice-of-life story that focuses on the daily lives of an established couple: a rising actor, Yuan Rui (the MC), and a jewelry designer, Zhang Qiuyang (the ML).

First Impressions

The title is a bit misleading, because most readers seem to agree that the couple is actually quite happy. What really grabbed my attention was the refreshing premise of an already established relationship. I'm always on the lookout for stories that explore the nuances of long-term love rather than just the initial courtship, and this seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

What Works Well

The biggest draw for me, and for many others, is the sheer sweetness and humor. The MC, Yuan Rui, is often described as naive and a bit of an airhead, but in an endearing way. He's also a self-proclaimed "face-con," meaning he's easily impressed by attractive people. This leads to plenty of comedic moments, especially when his boyfriend, Zhang Qiuyang, gets jealous. I found myself laughing out loud at their interactions.

The novel also shines in its portrayal of a healthy relationship. The couple communicates well, addresses conflicts maturely, and supports each other's aspirations. It's not all fluff, though; there's a touch of realism in how they navigate their careers, family dynamics, and personal insecurities. The characters feel like real people, with flaws and quirks that make them relatable.

Areas of Concern

While the overall sentiment is positive, some readers found the story bland or repetitive at times. One reader felt like they were reading filler, which can be a valid concern in slice-of-life stories. I can see how the lack of a major plot could be a turn-off for those seeking more dramatic narratives. There was also one review that mentioned not liking one of the side characters.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Several reviews bring up a character named Yang Lu, a director who inserts herself into the MC's life in a rather bizarre way. She is the estranged mother of the MC's first crush. One reviewer found her actions so intrusive and nonsensical that it significantly impacted their enjoyment of the story.

Final Verdict

Overall, I found Mr. Yuan is Always Unhappy to be a charming and enjoyable read. It's not groundbreaking literature, but it's a delightful escape into the lives of a loving and humorous couple. If you're looking for a fluffy, low-angst slice-of-life story with a focus on relationship dynamics, this might be just what you need. Just be aware that it might not be for you if you prefer more plot-driven narratives or dislike intrusive side characters.

Synopsis

Mr. Zheng (top) who stands at 186cm has liked women with fair skin and big b**bs for 30 years. Out of nowhere, he found himself in love with the bronzed-skinned and flat-chested Mr. Yuan (bottom) who stands at 189cm. From then on, he started his lovey-dovey life with shoe insoles. Mr. Yuan has been single for 27 years and has had countless one-sided crushes that never worked out. Finally, he met his true love, Mr. Zheng. But, Mr. Zheng was a chest fanatic (purely liked rubbing chests). So he couldn’t help but need to start buying boxes after boxes of chest pastes.
