My Thoughts on Man from the Wild South
"Man from the Wild South" is a completed wuxia romance that certainly left an impression. With its blend of comedy, fantasy, and mature themes, I went in expecting a unique ride, and it definitely delivered that. However, it's a novel that seems to sharply divide readers, and I can understand both sides of the argument.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a "black belly" male lead and a seemingly naive female lead. The comedy was apparent early on, and I found myself intrigued by the dynamic between the characters. The translation is quite good, which always helps with immersion.
What Works Well
The male lead, Feng Jin, is undeniably the star of the show. While morally questionable, his manipulative schemes and "evil" nature are undeniably entertaining. I can see why some readers describe him as an anti-hero you can't help but love. The story, being relatively short, moves at a brisk pace, preventing it from becoming boring. It’s a quick and easy read. For those who enjoy a morally grey character who doesn’t apologize, this story will be enjoyable.
Areas of Concern
Okay, let's address the elephant in the room. The male lead's actions are… problematic, to say the least. Several readers have pointed out instances of molestation and near-rape, and it's difficult to ignore these concerns. The lack of remorse from the male lead and the absence of consequences for his actions definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. It really detracts from the enjoyment of the story when the female lead falls in love with her abuser.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have mentioned specific instances where the male lead takes advantage of the female lead while she is unconscious, including fondling and considering rape. He also deceives her from the very beginning, and never apologizes for his lies, which some readers found unforgivable.
Final Verdict
"Man from the Wild South" is a tricky novel to recommend. If you enjoy morally ambiguous characters and don't mind potentially triggering content, you might find it to be a unique and humorous read. However, if you're sensitive to themes of non-consensual acts and the glorification of manipulative behavior, I would advise steering clear. Ultimately, it’s a story that sparks strong opinions, and your enjoyment will likely depend on your personal tolerance for morally grey characters and potentially triggering content. For me, the problematic elements overshadowed the comedic aspects, leaving me with mixed feelings.
