My Thoughts on Level Up Just By Eating
"Level Up Just By Eating" presents itself as a comedic isekai adventure, and after diving in, I can see why it's garnered a following, even if it's not without its flaws. The premise is simple: our protagonist gains power by, well, eating. It's a fun concept, and the execution is generally lighthearted.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a different kind of isekai. So many follow similar tropes, but the idea of a power system based on culinary consumption felt fresh. The early chapters delivered on this promise, establishing the MC's personality and the general comedic tone.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a strong point. It's not highbrow, and some jokes are definitely low-hanging fruit, but I found myself chuckling along. The protagonist's somewhat sadistic tendencies, without veering into outright villainy, offer a refreshing contrast to the typical "nice guy" isekai lead. The interactions between the MC and the goddess are a particular highlight, even if the goddess herself can be a bit much. Some readers have even compared the goddess to a blend of Aqua from Konosuba and Hestia from DanMachi, which seems like a fair assessment. The slice-of-life elements also add a layer of enjoyment, making it a relaxing read overall.
Areas of Concern
While the comedy is a major draw, the plot can feel a bit aimless. Several readers mentioned that the story lacks a clear direction, with the MC simply drifting from one event to the next. Also, the power scaling is a bit wild, and the MC becomes overpowered very quickly, which might diminish the sense of tension for some readers. The characters, beyond the MC, can also fall into familiar archetypes, and the goddess, while funny to some, is considered annoying by others.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out similarities between certain plot points in this novel and those in Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo Dorei Majutsu, specifically a story arc involving a naive priestess and a conspiracy within her religion. If you've read Isekai Maou, this might make certain plot twists predictable.
Final Verdict
"Level Up Just By Eating" is a fun, easy read if you're looking for a lighthearted isekai with a focus on comedy. Just be aware that the plot might not be the most engaging, and the characters can be a bit cliché. However, if you're willing to overlook these flaws and enjoy the ride, it can be a pleasant way to unwind. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
