My Thoughts on Let Me Pursue You
"Let Me Pursue You" is a completed historical romance novel that has left me with mixed, but overall positive, feelings. While some readers seem to have bounced off it, I found it to be a charming and often hilarious read, even with some acknowledged flaws.
First Impressions
Initially, I went in with a bit of trepidation, as some of the reviews were quite harsh. However, I quickly found myself drawn into the story of the female lead (FL), who, armed with fragmented dreams of the future, sets out to save her family from impending doom. Her strategy? Shamelessly pursue the male lead (ML), a seemingly cold court official. The premise alone had me intrigued.
What Works Well
The comedic elements are definitely a highlight. The interactions between the FL and ML are genuinely funny, with a delightful role reversal where the FL is the bold pursuer and the ML is often flustered. I particularly enjoyed the secret identity trope, which is cleverly woven into the plot and provides ample opportunities for humor. The FL's resourcefulness and determination, even in the face of limited knowledge and societal constraints, are admirable. I appreciated that she wasn't portrayed as an overpowered genius, but rather a clever woman making the most of her circumstances. The romance is slow-burn and satisfying, developing from a strategic alliance into genuine affection. The strong chemistry between the leads is undeniable, and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way. The political intrigue, while present, is handled in a way that's easy to follow and doesn't overshadow the romance. I also like that the author tied up the loose ends well.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, I can see where some of the criticisms come from. The FL's initial actions might strike some as overly focused on "seducing" the ML, and her reliance on him could be seen as a weakness. I can also understand why some readers might find the pacing awkward at times, or the FL immature.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk about the ending. Like many readers, I was heartbroken by the fate of the 6th Prince, Zheng Zhuo. His sacrifice was truly moving, and I wish he could have had a happier ending. It's a testament to the author's skill that a side character could evoke such strong emotions.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws and some tragic elements, "Let Me Pursue You" is an enjoyable read. If you're looking for a lighthearted historical romance with a healthy dose of humor and a determined female lead, I would recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a few tears along the way. I'd rate it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
