My Thoughts on In Name Only
"In Name Only" is a completed Chinese web novel that I recently dove into, and it's definitely a story that stuck with me. With a solid 4.5/5 rating, I had high expectations, and for the most part, it delivered a sweet and engaging read, even if it had a few bumps along the way.
First Impressions
The premise immediately grabbed me: two actors entering a fake relationship to avoid scandal. Classic, right? But the characters, especially the calm, go-with-the-flow MC and the more hot-headed, controlling ML, promised an interesting dynamic. I was ready for some fluffy, slice-of-life goodness with a showbiz backdrop.
What Works Well
I found the central relationship to be the strongest part of the novel. The growth between the two leads felt natural, and I appreciated that both characters had their own past traumas that shaped their behavior. The author did a good job of explaining these issues and showing how they affected the characters' interactions. I enjoyed the slice-of-life elements, too – the entertainment show appearances and filming projects felt like a realistic peek into the world of celebrities. The writing itself kept me engaged, making it easy to binge-read. The characters are very mature and decisive, making the story fast and wholesome despite some hardships. It's a sweet story of two actors getting into a fake relationship to avoid an even bigger scandal.
Areas of Concern
⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️
Okay, let's address the elephant in the room. One particular scene involving the ML discovering the MC's erectile dysfunction and then proceeding to... well, "fix" it without consent was deeply troubling. I can see how some might find the dubcon elements a little uncomfortable. This scene felt out of place and definitely detracted from my overall enjoyment.
Final Verdict
Despite my reservations about that one scene, I still found "In Name Only" to be a worthwhile read. The overall sweetness, the well-developed characters, and the engaging writing made it a story that I'd recommend – with a strong caution about the problematic scene. Just be warned and tread carefully.
