My Thoughts on I’m Surrounded by My Own Pets!
I finally dove into "I’m Surrounded by My Own Pets!" and came out with a pretty positive impression. It's definitely a fun, lighthearted read, even if it's not going to win any awards for groundbreaking narrative. The Pokémon comparisons are unavoidable, but it definitely carves out its own niche in the "beast companion" genre.
First Impressions
The initial hook is strong. The idea of a gamer transported into a world where students raise and battle beast pets is immediately appealing. I was particularly drawn to the unique power system and the academy setting, which promised a blend of slice-of-life elements with strategic battles. It felt like a good mix of familiar tropes with a fresh spin.
What Works Well
The MC is a definite highlight. She's cunning, confident, and not afraid to use her charm to her advantage. Her "OP" status, while leaning into plot armor at times, is handled in a way that's more amusing than frustrating. It's clear the author intended for her to be a force to be reckoned with, and they largely succeed. The beast-raising aspect is also well-executed. The various evolution types and the sheer number of beasts keep things interesting. The fights themselves, while not always deeply strategic, are entertaining enough to keep the story moving. The humor is a strong point too, with plenty of silly and lighthearted moments to balance out the action. The yuri elements are present, but they don't seem to overpower the rest of the story, which I appreciated.
Areas of Concern
The repetitive nature of the plot is probably my biggest gripe. The formula of "beat the strong, face a stronger foe, prepare, repeat" does get a bit stale after a while. Also, while the MC's "plot armor" is initially fun, it does become predictable towards the end. I also felt the ending was a bit rushed, which is a shame considering the length of the story.
Final Verdict
Overall, "I’m Surrounded by My Own Pets!" is a fun, casual read that's perfect if you're looking for something lighthearted and entertaining. It's not without its flaws, but the charming MC, the engaging beast-raising system, and the overall silliness make it a worthwhile experience. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys the "beast companion" genre, especially if you're looking for something with a yuri undertone. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
