My Thoughts on I Told You I’m Not 〇〇!! ~When I Helped Out the Most Beautiful Girl in My Class, My Identity Got Found Out~
This title is a mouthful, and honestly, after reading a good chunk of it, the story feels a bit like one too. "I Told You I’m Not 〇〇!!" has a fun premise: a secretly famous model trying to live a normal high school life. But does it deliver? Let's dive in.
First Impressions
I was initially drawn in by the concept of a protagonist with a hidden identity. The contrast between his mob character persona and his actual popularity as a model seemed ripe for comedic and romantic situations. The initial chapters did a decent job of setting this up, but I quickly found myself wanting more depth.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect, in my opinion, is the MC himself. He's not your run-of-the-mill dense protagonist; he's aware of his surroundings and has personal goals. This makes him more relatable and engaging than many similar characters in the genre. I also appreciated the slice-of-life elements. The interactions between the MC and his friends felt natural and brought back nostalgic high school memories. It's easy to get invested in their everyday lives, even if the overall plot progresses slowly.
Areas of Concern
However, the story definitely has its flaws. The pacing can be glacial, with entire chapters dedicated to internal monologues that don't significantly advance the plot or character development. The female lead's behavior, which some readers found pushy and unrealistic, also bothered me. Her persistence in trying to uncover the MC's secret, even when he clearly wanted to keep it hidden, felt uncomfortable at times.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the initial premise loses its impact as the story progresses. Eventually, the MC's secret identity becomes less of a central conflict, and the narrative shifts towards more generic slice-of-life scenarios. I can see how this could be disappointing for those expecting a constant tension surrounding the reveal.
Final Verdict
"I Told You I’m Not 〇〇!!" is a serviceable read if you're looking for a lighthearted, low-stakes slice of life with a unique protagonist. However, the slow pacing, underdeveloped characters, and questionable plot progression might leave you wanting more. It's not a masterpiece, but it has its charms, especially if you enjoy the high school setting and don't mind a dense protagonist. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
