My Thoughts on I Rely On The Collapse Of The Character Setting To Survive In The Hands Of The Male Lead
"I Rely On The Collapse Of The Character Setting To Survive In The Hands Of The Male Lead" is quite a mouthful, but don't let the title deter you. This historical fantasy novel with a side of shounen ai offers a captivating ride through ancient China, filled with political intrigue, complex relationships, and a protagonist just trying to survive. While the ending might not land perfectly for everyone, the journey is definitely worth taking.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I found myself drawn into Lin Qingyang's world. He's witty, adaptable, and his reactions to the absurd situations he finds himself in are genuinely funny. The male lead, with his "black belly" persona, is equally compelling. His past trauma makes his actions understandable, even when questionable. The story immediately establishes a world ripe with possibilities and characters I wanted to root for (and maybe smack upside the head a few times).
What Works Well
Many readers, myself included, praised the intricate plotlines and the well-developed side characters. The political and palace drama is engaging, and the misunderstandings that arise are often hilarious. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the MC and ML, watching as the ML grapples with his thirst for revenge and the unexpected presence of someone who actually cares about him. The system element is present but doesn't overwhelm the story, which is a plus in my book. The novel also shines in its portrayal of ambitious women and its exploration of complex family relationships. Lin Qingyang's dedication to his found family is a heartwarming aspect of the story.
Areas of Concern
The later part of the novel is where I felt things started to stumble a bit. Several readers mentioned that the pacing becomes rushed, with plot points and character developments feeling sacrificed for a quick resolution. The author seemed to spend a lot of time building storylines only to resolve them in a few paragraphs. Some also felt that the ML's character devolved into a more clichéd yandere archetype, which detracted from the unique dynamic established earlier in the story. I also saw some reader concerns about the ending not providing closure for all the side characters.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Be aware that some readers have mentioned the presence of dubious consent and r*pe later in the story. This was a major turn-off for some, and it's worth considering before diving in.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "I Rely On The Collapse Of The Character Setting To Survive In The Hands Of The Male Lead" is an engaging and entertaining read. The complex characters, intricate plotlines, and the humor woven throughout make it a worthwhile experience. While the ending may leave some wanting more, the journey itself is filled with enough twists, turns, and heartwarming moments to keep you hooked. I'd recommend it, but with the caveat to be aware of the potential triggers in the later chapters.
