My Thoughts on I Heard That I Am Poor
"I Heard That I Am Poor" is a completed web novel that I recently dove into, and it proved to be quite the experience. With genres spanning comedy, drama, and romance (yaoi), I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I came out pleasantly surprised and with a few tears shed.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit hesitant because of the synopsis. However, I quickly found myself drawn in by the characters, particularly the protagonist, Yu Nian. The early chapters hooked me, and I was eager to see how his story unfolded in the entertainment industry.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the cleverness of the main character. He isn't one to back down, and I found it refreshing that he immediately counters any negativity thrown his way. The relationship between Yu Nian and Xie You (the ML) is another strong point. It’s a slow-burn romance, which allows their feelings to develop naturally. I loved how supportive Xie You is of Yu Nian’s career, wanting him to shine as brightly as possible.
The novel also shines in its ability to resolve conflicts quickly. Misunderstandings don't drag on for chapters, which keeps the story moving at a good pace. Plus, karma often swiftly catches up to the villains, which I found satisfying. The author also incorporates elements of Chinese history and cultural artifacts, adding a unique layer to the story. I felt as though the preservation and repatriation of cultural artifacts were right and necessary.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the quick resolutions, I can see how some might find them a bit too convenient. The "face-slapping" moments, while initially satisfying, do become somewhat formulaic. Also, the author's tendency to resolve problems by simply proving the MC is perfect can feel a bit unrealistic. I noticed that the plot became a bit boring and repetitive near the end. Important plot points were sometimes skimmed over without sufficient closure, and the romance, while sweet, developed rather quickly.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some of you might want to skip this section if you haven't read the novel yet! Several reviews mentioned the emotional impact of Yu Nian's family situation, particularly the loss of his mother and father. This aspect of the story is definitely a tearjerker, so be prepared with tissues!
Final Verdict
Overall, "I Heard That I Am Poor" is an enjoyable and heartwarming read. While it has its flaws, the strong characters, satisfying romance, and quick-paced plot make it a worthwhile experience. If you're looking for a lighthearted yet touching story with a healthy dose of face-slapping, I'd recommend giving this one a try. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
