My Thoughts on I Got the Hypnosis App, Now I Can Do Whatever I Want!
First Impressions
Alright, I'll admit, the title had me bracing for the worst. "Hypnosis App" plus "Do Whatever I Want" usually screams questionable content, but I went in with an open mind. And I was actually pleasantly surprised! It's not a masterpiece, but it's a fun, fluffy read that subverts some of the darker tropes you might expect.
What Works Well
What I enjoyed most was the MC's surprisingly decent moral compass. He's got the app, he's got the urges, but he's also got a conscience. Instead of going full-on depraved, he ends up helping the girls he hypnotizes deal with their own messed-up situations. It’s like a white knight fantasy with a slightly questionable power source. The comedy is definitely a strong point, and I appreciated that the story focuses more on that than heavy drama. The characters, while not super deep, are likable enough for the genre, and I didn't find myself actively disliking anyone, which is always a plus. I also appreciate how the author doesn’t get bogged down in explicit details; the story moves along without needing to spell everything out.
Areas of Concern
A few things did hold it back from being a top-tier read. The translation can be a bit rough around the edges, with some confusing sentence structures. Also, while I didn't mind the lack of detailed sx scenes, some readers might find it disappointing. My biggest gripe is that the later additions to the harem feel less developed. The first few girls get plenty of attention, but the others start to feel like afterthoughts, which is a shame. The premise of the story is pretty similar to another novel, The Story of a Man Who Is Reincarnated as the Shttiest Guy in a Doujin, which made me think if it was a fad. I also thought that the protagonist's success with the girls would be unrealistic without him being physically attractive.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers mentioned that the harem dynamics shift towards yandere territory near the end, with all the girls magically agreeing to share the MC. This might be a turn-off for some, so be warned!
Final Verdict
Overall, I Got the Hypnosis App, Now I Can Do Whatever I Want! is a surprisingly enjoyable and fluffy read, especially if you're looking for something that subverts expectations within the ecchi/harem genre. It's not going to win any literary awards, but it's a fun way to kill some time, as long as you're okay with the translation quirks and the potential for some questionable harem dynamics later on. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars.
