Who it's for, and whether it holds up.
My Thoughts on I Asked A Beautiful Girl, Who Was About To Jump Off The School Rooftop, ‘If You’re Going To Die Anyway, Could You At Least Take My V*rginity Before You Go?’ To My Surprise, She Agreed.
This title is certainly a mouthful, isn't it? I went into this web novel with a healthy dose of skepticism, but also a sliver of hope for something unique. After reading a fair bit, I can say it's a mixed bag, but leaning towards enjoyable.
First Impressions
The premise is definitely… attention-grabbing. A shy boy, fresh from another world, encounters a bullied girl on the verge of ending it all, and blurts out that question. It's a bizarre setup, and I wasn't sure if the story could pull it off without being cringeworthy. Surprisingly, it manages to navigate the initial awkwardness with a degree of sensitivity, focusing on the developing relationship between the two leads.
What Works Well
The core strength of this story lies in the characters and their burgeoning connection. Both the male and female protagonists are introverted and have their own struggles. The female lead is dealing with the aftermath of intense bullying, while the male lead is adjusting to life back in his original world after his isekai adventure. Watching them slowly open up to each other and find solace in their shared vulnerabilities is genuinely heartwarming. The romance, while central, doesn't feel forced; it's a gradual process of mutual understanding and support. The author does a good job of portraying their emotional growth as they break free from their shells. I also appreciate that while the story flirts with mature themes, it keeps the details PG-13, focusing more on the emotional connection than explicit content.
Areas of Concern
While the character development is a strong point, the plot can feel a bit formulaic at times. As a "returnee romance," it falls into some familiar tropes. Also, the story requires a suspension of disbelief. Some plot points can feel a bit far-fetched.
Final Verdict
"I Asked A Beautiful Girl..." is a surprisingly sweet and engaging story about two introverted individuals finding love and healing together. While the plot might not be the most original, the character development and emotional core make it a worthwhile read if you're looking for a lighthearted and heartwarming romance with a touch of the supernatural. I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for a satisfying, albeit slightly predictable, escape.
