My Thoughts on How To Say I Love You
"How To Say I Love You" promised a fluffy romance set against the backdrop of the entertainment industry, and having finished it, I can say it mostly delivers. While some aspects didn't entirely click for me, the overall experience was enjoyable, particularly the central relationship.
First Impressions
The premise immediately grabbed me: a rookie actor, Xiao Jiashu, and a seasoned professional, Ji Mian, thrown together amidst the glitz and glamour of showbiz. Ji Mian's sudden ability to read minds after a bizarre incident adds an interesting twist, revealing the hidden thoughts and insecurities swirling beneath the surface of the seemingly perfect world of celebrities. I was ready for some sweet and funny moments.
What Works Well
The dynamic between the main characters is definitely a highlight. Xiao Jiashu's earnestness and genuine nature are endearing, and the way Ji Mian gradually falls for him, aided by his newfound mind-reading ability, feels organic. The author does a great job of portraying their growing affection and support for each other. Many found the ML super caring and supportive of the MC, making their relationship a joy to read. I also appreciated that the author didn't shy away from showing their enthusiasm for each other once they got together.
The novel also explores the complexities of relationships, particularly Ji Mian's initial relationship with his boyfriend. While some readers disliked how the boyfriend was portrayed, I thought his insecurities and flaws made him a relatable character. The author touches on the challenges of maintaining a relationship in the public eye, especially when one partner is still figuring out their identity. I appreciated the realistic portrayal of his character.
Areas of Concern
I did find some inconsistencies in the character development, particularly with Xiao Jiashu. His initial sharp-tongued persona seemed to fade away, replaced by a more consistently "cute" and innocent demeanor. While I enjoyed his endearing qualities, I missed the initial edge that made him unique. Also, the plot could be rather "wish-fulfillment" at times.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers mentioned issues with the ending, describing it as rushed and unnecessarily dramatic. The introduction of a hidden conspiracy and convoluted family drama felt out of place and detracted from the overall sweetness of the story.
Final Verdict
Despite some flaws, "How To Say I Love You" is a charming and entertaining read, especially if you're looking for a fluffy BL romance with a touch of the supernatural. While the plot might not be the most groundbreaking, the engaging characters and sweet relationship make it a worthwhile escape. I'd recommend it to fans of the genre, but with the caveat that the ending might leave you wanting more. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
